My Thoughts

I have always liked stories about world building, whether it is on a big scale like creating a whole new way of how the world works like a dystopian novel might do or on a smaller scale such as is creating a secret society with their own set of rules within the world we already know. Charlotte Abel does it on a smaller scale in this book and, even though sometimes I wanted to knock heads together, I was still very interested in the way it all worked.

The story pulled me in effortlessly and, in the beginning, I really wanted to get to know Jonathan. His initial chapters were the most heartbreaking for me. But later in the book, I was kind of disappointed at the quick 180 degree turn his personality took. He went from being “douchey” to a having hero complex without showing a clearer growth process. Luckily the author’s writing style, which I really liked, kept me glued to the story even when I wanted to knock even more heads together. Men...

I really liked how fast I went through the book. And I also liked that although I sometimes rolled my eyes at the character’s easy acceptance of new information (Yes, I’m talking about Jonathan.), I was never bored. However, I have to mention that there’s a triangle. It’s not a common sort of love triangle, so it didn’t bother me that much, but I was kind of cringing at the insta-love. I’ll just make believe it was all those pheromones in the air.

I would have liked to “see” more shifting, it’s barely mentioned in the book and that was far more surprising than the ending sentence, which was completely expected. I will be waiting for the second book since I want to know what they will be up to next. My rating is 3.5 out of five.

About Charlotte Abel:

Charlotte Abel was born and raised in Oklahoma where she met her soulmate, Pete. She chased him to Boulder, Colorado and finally convinced him they were meant to be together forever. They've raised three kids, two ferrets, three dogs and countless hamsters -- and are still happily married.

She's in love with "real" life and paranormal romance. When she's not reading or writing, Charlotte enjoys hiking, bicycling and primitive archery (although she's never shot at anything other than a target!)

The final book of The Channie Series, "Finding Valor," should be available by Christmas.
